Call to English mother tongue opera singers: 5 most common mistakes in the pronunciation of Italian.

It is already eight years that I have been living abroad and I got enough experience as Italian language and vocal coach for declaring what I am going to tell you.

English mother tongue opera singers (both British and American) usually get stuck on pronunciation of some details of Italian. Most of you I am sure is thinking: “ok, the importance is that they are clear in being understood”. MISTAKE!!!

We know well how daily every single detail in life could make a huge difference in the result of the goal we are aiming to. Imagine for an opera singer, who studies hours per day to gain a great level and be competitive in auditions for opera venue. It is very frustrating to have a great voice, but to sing with a strong “accent” or slang.

It is why I want to point out the most common mistakes in the Italian pronunciation, For my point of view they are five:

1. The double consonants that magically become single when the spelling of a word is double and become double when the spelling is with only one consonant. “Cielo” sounds like “CieLLo” in the wrong pronunciation, but “dalle” becomes “daLe”
2. The big confusion with the vowels “e” and “o”. We have “e” that sounds /e/ or /è/ and “o” that sounds /o/ or /ò/. Most of the time it is not clear the difference in a not Italian singer. (I want to reveal you a secret: this mistake is VERY COMMON also in the Italian singers, because of the slang they are used to speak).
3. The consonant “r” that in some cases is too reinforced when it is not needed. In general American singers are quite good with “r”. British ones find more troubles and most of the time their “r” sounds like /wo/.
4. The struggle in pronouncing the group of two consonants “gl” and “gn”. The general trend is to pronounce either /g-l/ and /g-n/ in two separate sounds, either /l/ and /n/, forgetting the“g”. Unless, you have a good coach who can give you a trick. 😉
5. The lack of enough pronunciation of consonants at the beginning of word during the singing (Example: “Quanto amore ed io spietata….” most of the time “q” of “quanto” and “s” of “spietata” are almost not pronunced at all). It seems that the “legato” in most of the cases is thought like a missing of consonants for giving space in exaggerating the vowels.

Chiamata ai cantanti lirici di madrelingua inglese: 5 errori più comuni nella pronuncia dell’italiano.

Sono già otto anni che vivo all’estero e posso dire di aver acquisito sufficiente esperienza come preparatore di dizione italiana e vocal coach per dichiarare ciò che sto per scrivere.

I cantanti d’opera di madrelingua inglese (sia inglesi che americani) spessp trovano difficoltà in alcuni dettagli della pronuncia italiana. Molti di voi sono sicura che stanno pensando: “va bene, ma l’importante è che sia possibile capirli”. “NO!!!”

Sappiamo bene quanto ogni singolo dettaglio nella vita possa fare un’enorme differenza nel risultato al quale aspiriamo. Immaginate un cantante lirico che studia per ore ogni giorno per raggiungere ottimi livelli ed essere competitivo nelle audizioni per i teatri d’opera. È davvero frustrante avere una grande voce, ma cantare con un forte accento o cadenza dialettale.

È per questo che intendo indicare i più comuni errori commessi nella pronuncia dell’italiano, Per me sono cinque:

1. La consonante doppia che magicamente diventa singola quando la parola ha una doppia e diventa doppia quando la parola ha sono una consonante. “Cielo” suona come “CieLLo”, ma “dalle” divena “daLe”;
2. La grande confusione con le vocali “e” e “o”. La “e” si pronuncia /e/ o /è/ e la vocale “o” è sia /o/ che /ò/. La gran parte delle volte non è chiara la differenza di pronuncia in un cantante non italiano. (Voglio svelarvi un segreto: questo errore è MOLTO COMUNE anche tra i cantanti italiani, a causa delle cadenze dialettali che generalmente usano nel parlare).
3. La consonante “r” che in alcuni casi è troppo pronunciata quando non serve. In generale i cantanti americani sono piuttosto bravi con le “r”. Quelli inglesi trovano molte più difficoltà e la gran parte delle volte la loro “r” suona come /wo/.
4. Lo sforzo nel pronunciare il gruppo di due consonanti “gl” e “gn“. La tendenza generale è di pronunciare sia /g-l/ e /g-n/ come due suoni tra loro separati, sia /l/ e /n/ dimenticando la “g”. Tutto questo accade a meno che voi non abbiate un buon coach che sappia consigliarvi un trucchetto. 😉
5. La mancanza di sufficiente pronuncia di consonanti all’inizio di parola durante il canto (Esempio: “Quanto amore ed io spietata…” la gran parte delle volte “q” di “quanto” e “s” di “spietata” non vengono quasi affatto pronunciate). Sembra che il “legato” in gran parte dei casi è pensato come un trascurare consonanti per dare uno spazio esagerato alle vocali.

Posso vedervi pensare… “Ok, ma ora quali sono le soluzioni?” Non preoccupatevi, arriveranno presto con i miei video nei quali parlerò di questi e altri problemi di dizione italiana, con consigli, trucchetti e suggerimenti pratici.
