Days ago I stumbled upon Facebook on one of the many videos that are shooting in this period. The “Toccata” by Pietro Domenico Paradisi, however, struck me particularly, because two marimbas are rarely heard playing together and so well. It is true that one of the two elements of the duo, Cristiano, was my musical partner during my last period in Italy … (ok let’s face it, I was his pianist accompanist) and therefore I had no doubts about his skills. But let’s stop to waste time, let’s listen to the story of Cristiano Menegazzo and Matteo Carnicelli.
Giorni fa sono incappata su Facebook su uno dei tanti video che girano in questo periodo. La “Toccata” di Pietro Domenico Paradisi, però, mi ha colpito particolarmente, perché raramente si sentono due marimbe suonare insieme e cosí bene. È pur vero che uno dei due elementi del duo, ossia Cristiano, è stato mio partner musicale durante il mio ultimo periodo in Italia… (ok diciamola tutta, sono stata la sua pianista accompagnatrice) e quindi non avevo dubbi sulla sua bravura. “Bando alle ciance” ascoltiamo la storia di Cristiano Menegazzo e di Matteo Carnicelli.
Cristiano, How did you get the idea to record this piece and why?
Cristiano: “Having a lot of time due to the lockdown for Coronavirus, we decided to take the opportunity to stay in training and virtually join Facebook friends, giving them some of our music. So we decided to create this multitrack video. “
Cristiano, Come avete avuto l’idea di registrare questo pezzo e perché?
Cristiano: “Avendo a disposizione molto tempo a causa del lockdown per il Coronavirus, abbiamo pensato di cogliere l’occasione per rimanere in allenamento e unirci virtualmente agli amici di Facebook, regalando loro un po’ della nostra musica. Abbiamo cosí deciso di creare questo video multitraccia.”
Tell me briefly about yourself and how you met each other.
Parlatemi brevemente di voi e di come vi siete conosciuti.
Matteo: “I am from Moricone (Rome) and I have just turned eighteen. I met Cristiano at the age of about eight, because our parents had known each other for some time. So I studied percussion with him for a year, then continuing with who was also his teacher. Over time I went back to study with Cristiano, but right now rarely I can get lesson from him, since he lives in Belgium.” Cristiano: “I am twenty-nine years old and I come from San Gregorio da Sassola (Rome). I currently have the honour of working permanently at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra as a Timpanist / Percussionist. As Matteo said, we met around ten years ago. I was starting my post-diploma career and he entered the world of music through the local bands. Matteo has always been a boy with beautiful musical skills and surely, with his commitment and dedication to studying, he will gain a lot of goals during his career.
Matteo: “Sono di Moricone (Roma) e ho da poco compiuto diciott’anni. Ho conosciuto Cristiano all’età di circa otto anni perché i nostri genitori si conoscevano già da tempo. Ho cosí studiato un anno percussioni con lui, proseguendo poi con quello che è stato anche il suo maestro. Col tempo sono tornato a studiare da Cristiano, ma capita poco ormai, dato che lui ormai vive in Belgio.” Cristiano: “Ho ventinove anni e sono originario di San Gregorio da Sassola (Roma). Attualmente ho l’onore di lavorare stabilmente presso la Antwerp Symphony Orchestra come Timpanista/Percussionista. Come diceva Matteo, ci siamo conosciuti più o meno dieci anni fa. Io cominciavo la mia carriera post-diploma e lui si immetteva nel mondo della musica attraverso le bande musicali del territorio. Matteo è sempre stato un ragazzo con belle doti musicali e sicuramente, con il suo impegno e dedizione allo studio, avrà belle soddisfazioni durante la carriera.
What is the meaning of music for you both in this period of quarantine?
Cosa significa per voi la musica in questo periodo di quarantena?
Matteo: “Music in this period, as well as being the outlet that has always been, for me also represents an instrument of communication with the outside world, even if minimal, but indispensable. With it we can mentally escape from these four walls that surround us. Furthermore, the creation of these multitrack videos is our “smart working”, because what we usually do in live, that are performances to give emotions or simply let people spend a different hour, now we try to do it through the screen. ” Cristiano: “For me, music is a shelter but also a liberation. In this period it is essential to keep it alive, more than ever. If I am facing my current days with light-heartedness, positivity, optimism and hope, it is thanks to it!”
Last question: which quote would you choose if you should describe music and culture in general as pandemics?
Matteo: “Music, like a pandemic, helps us stay united without differences.” Cristiano: “If music were a contagious virus, it would become the most beautiful pandemic in the world.”
Matteo: ” La musica in questo periodo, oltre che essere lo sfogo che è sempre stato, per me rappresenta anche uno strumento di comunicazione con il mondo esterno anche se minimo, ma indispensabile. Con essa possiamo evadere mentalmente da queste quattro mura che ci circondano. Inoltre il creare questi video multitraccia è il nostro “smart working”, perché quello che solitamente facciamo in live, ossia performances per regalare emozioni o semplicemente far passare un’ora diversa alle persone, ora cerchiamo di farlo attraverso lo schermo.” Cristiano: “Per me la musica è un rifugio ma anche una liberazione. In questo periodo è essenziale tenerla viva, più che mai. Se sto affrontando le mie giornate attuali con spensieratezza, positività, ottimismo e speranza è proprio grazie ad essa!”
Per concludere: quale aforisma scegliereste se dovesse indicare la musica e la cultura come pandemie?
Matteo: “La musica, come una pandemia, ci aiuta a restare uniti come mondo.” Cristiano: “Se la musica fosse un virus contagioso, diverrebbe la pandemia più bella del mondo.”
